The American Petroleum Institute and the Association of American Railroads jointly requested the Department of Transportation to allow them up to seven years to retrofit older tank cars that carry crude oil and other hazardous materials.  The two industry organizations made the request in relation to the Department of Transportation’s recent comprehensive rulemaking proposal for enhanced tank car standards, which would require shippers to retrofit much of their tank car fleet much sooner.  A representative of the American Petroleum Industry stated that additional time is needed to allow tank car manufactures to gear up to retrofit tens of thousands of tank cars and limit any stifling of North America’s energy renaissance.  To read more about the organizations comments, see the article attached here.
