New Safety Fitness Determination Rules under Review by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Leadership

According to a recent article in the Commercial Carrier Journal (CCJ), a draft Notice of Proposed Rulemaking which seeks to change the rating systems for trucking companies is being reviewed by leadership at the FMCSA.  The new rule and rating system will be based on the Compliance Safety Accountability program, and as reported by CCJ contributor Kevin Jones, will include “an absolute carrier score … and will not use relative comparisons or groupings.”

This new rule appears fast tracked as the FMCSA would like to see the new rule published by October 2015.  To do so, the rule will need to be approved by FMCSA leaders, then reviewed and approved by the Office of the Secretary of Transportation and then the White House’s Office of Management and Budget.
