In October, the Surface Transportation Board issued new reporting requirements for Class I railroads. The Board now requires each Class I rail carrier to file weekly data reports to promote industry-wide transparency, accountability and improvements in rail service. The Board took the action, in part, to address shippers’ assertions that performance metrics are important for rail users to plan logistics, minimize economic harm to operations and revenues, assist with business planning, and to better serve their own customers during service-recovery periods. Shippers also noted that weekly information would bring greater transparency regarding the extent to which the railroads are improving and resolving certain ongoing service issues. The Board agreed and issued the new requirements.
