BNSF’s Attempts To Get Back on Track
BNSF has repeatedly been criticized this year for increased congestion on its rail network, leading to longer waiting times at terminals and severe declines in rail speeds. Most recently, BNSF’s freight volumes have reached record highs for the past two months. Rather than put its head in the sand and wait for the congestion issues to slowly work themselves out, BNSF has taken a bold stand. It has refused to allow its current customers to add new tank cars to the system until sometime in 2015. The plan is to analyze what the network can handle and improve efficiencies before adding new volume. While BNSF surely does not relish turning away business – in this case, over 1000 new tank cars – BNSF has recognized it must take action to attempt to remedy the problem.
